The Last One

Before he was born, Cleve Jones’ grandmother made him a quilt. This simple gift of love and continuity was to inspire the largest memorial in history. During the height of the AIDS crisis, Cleve Jones founded the Names Project Foundation. Since then, the AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to over 48,000 panels and is known throughout the world. “It was never intended to be a passive memorial,” says Jones, “It was intended to be a weapon.” THE LAST ONE is the story of the Quilt as told by the people who helped create it. It is also the story of those working with it today to serve the largely ignored communities still living with AIDS. We share powerful moments as survivors lovingly craft their memorial panels. And we see that special panel, held in reserve, for the day everybody prays for. This warm and wonderful documentary doesn't just give us the history of the Quilt, it brings us up to the minute and looks towards its (hopefully very short) future. —C.R.
