About This Film
Film Overview
You’ll never believe this, but a deep well of horror movie knowledge may one day save your life. At least it might save a clerk and one of his customers after they accidentally unleash hell inside one of Canada’s last remaining video stores via a long-overdue, incredibly cursed B-movie videotape.Paying homage to independent video stores and 1980s schlock, this horror comedy is a fast-paced, nostalgia-fueled romp made by VHS lovers for VHS lovers. When Nyla, the daughter of Blaster Video’s only customer, visits the store to return her father’s overdue tapes, she unknowingly hands the owner, Kevin, a rarity he’s never seen. Only after popping it into the VHS player does Kevin realize it’s a fabled, cursed tape: the Videonomicon. Now trapped in the shop, the two must work together to defeat baddies from obscure sci-fi, horror, and action movies coming to life before their eyes. Featuring an analog aesthetic complete with neon lighting and a synth-wave score, it’s an authentic love letter to the obsolete technology. But far from obsolete in our hearts, THE LAST VIDEO STORE is chock-full of charm, gleeful gore, and easter eggs sure to delight any B-movie fan. —D.O.
