The Long Vacation

THE LONG VACATION focuses on three heartbreaking stories of people who were erased from Slovenia's civil register in 1992, due to a controversial law put in place a year after the country declared its independence. At age 13, Aleksandar returned home from vacation in Serbia to find that he was no longer recognized as a citizen. It took 20 years before he could enter the country again. Katrina was a college student at the time, losing her apartment, legal papers, and even her parents during the ordeal. Bosnian-born Nisveta struggled for her daughter who, for the first two years of her life, was seen as nonexistent by her country. Over 20,000 people were affected by the cruel and senseless legislation. Though it was ruled unconstitutional by Slovenia's Constitutional Court in 1999, it is estimated that over 6,000 people are still fighting for legal status. THE LONG VACATION articulately explores the devastating impact the law had on innocent Slovenians. By documenting their incredible stories, the film ensures that they will never be erased again.
