The New Man

Born to a large family in Nicaragua, Roberto knew the streets by age seven. His parents “lent” him to a refugee Uruguayan family who carried him off into the Sandinista revolution and into the militia at age 12. His family never knew what became of him. Years later Roberto is living openly as Stephania, the woman he always knew he was. She is working as a parking attendant in Montevideo and living on the streets or in hovels as she applies for a legal sex change. Memories of the large family she feels she deserted haunt her. Using social media to locate them, Stephania decides to return to Nicaragua and reunite openly with her conservative and very religious family, as a woman. As the trip unfolds, startling revelations are made about Stephania's life, as well as the roles revolution and war play in shaping people's destinies. Stephania's journey in THE NEW MAN is one of hope, forgiveness, overcoming prejudice, and fighting for the right to live as we wish. (In Spanish with subtitles) –C.R.
