About This Film
Film Overview
In his old age, former hunter Antonio Bolivar (Richard Dreyfuss) has become quite the romantic. Living in El Idilio, a small town in the depths of the jungle, Antonio has taken up a passion for trashy romance novels, hence the title THE OLD MAN WHO READ LOVE STORIES. No one knows about his secret obsession except for the visiting dentist, Rubicondo, on whom Antonio relies to provide him with new reading material, and the local servant girl, Josephina, with whom Antonio has been sharing his stories. Antonio and Josephina soon become more than just book buddies, but outside forces quickly interrupt their relationship and the peaceful coexistence between man and nature in the town of El Idilio. After the futile killing of a jaguar's cubs by an illegal hunter, the hunter's body is found dead. Now, the mother jaguar has begun to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting inhabitants of El Idilio, and the only man capable of restoring peace is Antonio. But he must first deal with his own inner demons. – E.J.B.
