Film Overview
The second of Josh Aronson's dual documentaries continues to examine the metamorphosis of transgendered people – and this one focuses on a female-to-male transition. Anaheim resident Rene Pene is a 31-year-old diminutive barrel of machismo with body-building athleticism who has a working-class profession. From as early as age three, Rene began assertively identifying as male, dressing the part. Rene began a relationship with demure Wona, whom Rene marries at 18. Rene and Wona kept Rene's gender identity a secret for years, until they were outted. THE OPPOSITE SEX: RENE'S STORY follows the journey of Rene and his family as he undergoes a portion of his surgical transition; but, the strongest drama emerges from his dissolving marriage.
