About This Film
Film Overview
Joe Sarno was the “Ingmar Bergman of pornographic films.” But that was 40 years ago. What’s life like for a pornographer at the age of 88? As Joe hunts and pecks his way through the keys on his typewriter, he realizes he might have one more left in him. THE SARNOS: A LIFE IN DIRTY MOVIES is a probing, intimate portrait of the legendary filmmaker and his wife, as Joe sets out to make one last film. But times have changed, and Joe has to adapt to the world of internet pornography and instant gratification. As Joe’s uncompromising artistic vision emerges, he is finally recognized as an innovative filmmaker, but also as an antiquated one. Through candid footage of the lively couple and a slew of tongue-in-cheek interviews including John Waters, Joe’s immense cinematic influence becomes strikingly clear. Equal parts social commentary, a penetrating study of a dedicated relationship, and steamy high-brow entertainment, this documentary portrays the couple’s world as nothing short of cinematic folklore. —C.P.
