Filmmaker David Lowery (“A Ghost Story”) and actress Kate Mara (House of Cards) executive-produced this hard-hitting exposé of factory farming as the predominantly Black residents of rural Duplin County, North Carolina fight back against Smithfield, the multibillion-dollar, Chinese-owned pork corporation that has been poisoning their land. —M.G.

Factory farming has its fair share of evils—releasing incredible amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, causing horrific deforestation and irreversible damage to the land and soil, and of course, forcing inhumane living conditions on the animals in their care. But there’s one glaring issue that doesn’t get enough attention because no one wants to think about it; and that is, with all of the overcrowded indoor facilities that house these animals, where does all the s**t go? The answer will lead you to disgust and outrage. Highlighting industrial hog farms in North Carolina, THE SMELL OF MONEY is an eye-opening documentary that explores the unethical disposal of animal feces and the environmental racism that comes with it. When the laws in place only protect the people getting rich off of poisoning their neighbors, it's time to take action. —G.S.
