About This Film
Film Overview
Jeff Goldblum's performance in EARTH GIRLS ARE EASY at last year's Cleveland International Film Festival was a huge success – crowds at both sold-out shows loved the film and its leading man. This year, the Cleveland International Film Festival is proud to present Jeff Goldblum in a wonderful new romantic comedy, THE TALL GUY Directed by popular British comedian Mel Smith, Goldblum stars in the title role as Dexter Kinc,, a loveable, lanky and naive American actor living in London and workin,-, as the stooge for the hateful but popular stace comic Ron Anderson (Rowan Atkinson of “Black Adder” fame). During a visit to the hospital for allergy shots, Dexter falls hopelessly in love with one of the nurses, Kate Lemon (Emma Thompson). Dexter makes repeated trips to the hospital for one symptom or another, and finally gets up the courage to ask Nurse Lemon for a date. She wonders what took him so long. The love scene that follows is certainly one of the most playful, inventive and funny to be found in any film. All that sex makes Dexter late for his show, and thus he finds himself out of a job. Making the rounds to every audition in town, Dexter, who can neither sing nor dance, lands himself the lead role in a ludicrous musical about the Elephant Man called “Elephant!” The show is a smash, Dexter becomes an instant celebrity, and trouble comes to paradise. Can Dexter King be both a star and Nurse Lemon's boyfriend? He hopes so. THE TALL GUY is an exceptional comedy with an intelligent script and a top-notch cast. Emma Thompson, seen earlier this spring as Princess Katherine in Kenneth Branagh's HENRY V, shines in her role as the poised and confident foil for Goldblum's effusive character. She's a rising star worth watching.
