About This Film
Film Overview
One of the most visually beautiful features to come out of South Korea, THE TWO FLAGS takes place in the civil war year of 1950 and, while clearly a plea in the civil war year of 1950 and , while clearly a plea for Korean reconciliatiion, tells a timeless tale that could take place anywhere there are men, women, and want. A nameless widow dwells alone atop a barren , snow-covered hill. Having seen her husband and son die at the hands of different armies, she keeps the banners of either North or South to hang outside when the fighting draws near. Thus she has been able to keep her small homestead safe-until she shelters two successive refugees, an old man and a young deserter. After their intial gratitude wears off, both men compete to dominate the tiny household and its meager resources, with the tough but all-too vulnerable heroine caught in the midst of their threats, seductions, pleadings and power plays. Then a third battle-weary stranger shows up and completely upsets the balance. With glowing cinematography and archetype characters, THE TWO FLAGS is a fable for the ages. In Korean with English subtitles.
