About This Film
Film Overview
From Macedonian filmmaker Tamara Kotevska, co-director of the Oscar®-nominated “Honeyland,” comes the dual stories of Asil, a Syrian ten-year-old who has lost her family and home to war, and Amal, a 12-foot puppet and performance art installation that has traveled thousands of miles around the world, raising awareness of the global refugee crisis.Young Asil is an orphaned Syrian refugee awaiting word that may never come on the survival of her family in Turkey. Her story—along with the stories of countless other children—is represented in Amal, a 12-foot puppet on a journey from Syria to Europe. Documenting the refugee experiences of Amal’s puppeteers as well as Asil, THE WALK follows Amal’s trek to bring awareness about the plight of refugee children. Met with both hostility and kindness along the way, Amal reveals the compassion (or lack of it) within the communities she enters. From director Tamara Kotevska of the multiple Oscar®-nominated “Honeyland,” this documentary features unforgettable images and a potent message. —C.F.This film is presented with generous support from MARY BROWN in honor of all the children in the world.Content Warning: This film contains material that may be difficult for some viewers.
