Film Overview

Original Title: Das Wei?e Rauschen
English Title: THE WHITE SOUND

Unlike the Hollywood stereotype of the schizophrenic-as-mass-murderer, THE WHITE SOUND portrays a young man whose illness comes to him slowly and realistically. Lukas, a 21-year-old country boy, moves to Cologne to live with his sister Kati and enter college. But all Kati and her boyfriend do is drink, get high and screw and Lukas begins to feel lost when he really is: he can?t find the registrar?s office at school and so abruptly abandons higher education. He has explosive angry moments, and his genuine fear of careening in a car with his drunk sister becomes exaggerated. Paranoia creeps in, and Lukas needs to use medicine that causes somnambulism and rely on the white noise of running water to keep voices at bay. To enhance Lukas? experiences, the film changes focus and color a lot, and threads in voices the audience can hear. It looks and feels much like a Dogme 95 film.
