Film Overview

How does one capture the genius of Glenn Gould- master performer and interpreter of Bach, recording pioneer, brilliant eccentric- on film? Quebecois filmaker Francois Gerard (“Le Dortir”) adopts a highly original style in an attempt to read the mind of the piano virtuoso in a 32-part work based on the structure of Bach's “Goldberg Variations”. Unfolding in richly elegant scenes, the camera moving with a beautiful, efficient grace, THRITY TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD plunges directly into the milieu of McLuhan-era Toronto and the storm of Gould's ideas, his thoughts on everything from technology and his craving for perfection to his fondness for prescription drugs and, above all, his love for the tonalities of order. Actor Colm Feore embodies Gould completely, presenting a portrait of a man, though utterly quirky and obsessive, of blinding talent and undeniable brilliance. -Kit Kalfs.
