Film Overview
Director ldrissa Ouedraogo entered the forefront of African cinema with last year's YAABA (14th CIFF,1990). TILAI, winner of a Jury Prize at Cannes, confirms his talent. Set in an African village regulated by unbending tribal law, the story concerns a young man away from the community for two Years, who returns to find his beloved taken in marriage by his own father. When the young man refuses to end the love affair, he has, in effect, committed incest, punishable by death – if the law is obeyed. Despite the locale, Ouedraogo's own country of Burkina Faso, the themes transcend all boundaries, and his direct, uncluttered style addresses emotions that are universal. This is truly world-class filmmaking.
