Things are tough in suburbia. Maria, an ordinary, self-centered, teenage brat, is pregnant by her quarterback boyfriend. On hearing of her pregnancy, Maria's father drops dead. Disowned by her devastated mother, dumped by her lover, and shunned by her friends, Maria wanders the streets until she meets Matthew, a brilliant but brooding computer repairman who has abandoned his job. After some initial mistrust and disinterest, a courtship develops, and together they help one another get through their awful lives.
