Rosario will do anything for her nine-year-old son Carlitos, even if that means leaving him in Mexico as she goes to find work and a better life for them in Los Angeles. And Carlitos will do anything to be back with her. When Carlitos' grandmother, who is caring for him, unexpectedly dies, he embarks on a journey to cross the border and reunite with his mother. Along the way, he meets others who are attempting the same dangerous expedition, including seeking help from a coyote- transporter of illegals and his girlfriend, played by America Ferrara. He discovers that a trip to the United States is difficult at best and, more often, treacherous. Before Carlitos' mother left, she told him to look at the moon when he misses her and that she would be doing the same. But can he believe she is still doing that? The only way he will find out is to keep moving toward his goal.
