About This Film
Film Overview
Two families speak truth to power as they attempt to defeat the gold and copper-farming Pebble Mine project, which would upend not only their careers as sockeye salmon fishers…but also destroy their native land as they know it. Executive produced by Erin Brockovich.UNEARTH follows local Alaskans—brothers Aube and Dune Strickland and sisters Christina and AlexAnna Salmon—as they contend with the politics, power players, and physical realities of the proposed Pebble Mine in their homeland of Bristol Bay. Fishermen Aube and Dune spend summers on their boats alongside other commercial vessels, sustainably harvesting half the world’s supply of wild sockeye salmon within a pristinely intact ecosystem. The Salmon sisters are native Alaskans whose people have been successfully stewarding this land and the fishery for over 10,000 years. As they dig into the facts, they uncover a web of lies and backdoor deals that work against the interests of the local community and dismiss all reputable science. Their journey illuminates issues and atrocities systemic to the mining industry—capitalism, colonialism, extraction, destruction, and deception—and the fundamental tension between a shrinking planet and a world order addicted to eternal growth and consumption.
