About This Film
Film Overview
In this biting Indiana-shot drama, Gary resident and commercial cleaner Ray (Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Killing Eve) is in for an eye-opening experience when she accepts a high-paying job as a personal housekeeper and slowly, uncomfortably acclimates to high society. Costarring Sarah Goldberg (Barry) and Maria Dizzia (Orange is the New Black).Ray, an enterprising young woman, usually cleans commercial spaces. Earbuds in, she does her job. But when a client hires her to clean his home and a neighbor’s home, she gets pulled into the unfamiliar and uninviting world of the wealthy. As if the looming and rigid discomfort inside these homes weren’t enough, she puts up with microaggressions and petty drama from her new clients, Jean and Tracy. Using racial stereotypes to her advantage, Ray convinces the women she’s a psychic who can read people and contact the dead… for a price. The allure of extra cash and being a fixture in the lives of unknowable rich people is strong. But beneath the surface, Ray is a simmering kettle starting to lose sight of her real community: her family and friends in Gary, Indiana. With moments of dark comedy and surreal dissociation, WE STRANGERS is a sharp and eerie portrait of the tensions between race, class, and our sense of belonging. —D.O.GUEST(S) IN ATTENDANCE
