Film Overview
In this quirky satire, Alan Bates plays Frank, a civil servant whose homosexual liaison with Johnny (Gary Oldman), is discreetly under wraps in London's conservative '50s. When Johnny is jailed for stealing, Frank is incensed over the neglect of Johnny's beloved dog, Evie, by Johnny's parents. Frank fights to take over her care. Though Evie completely disrupts Frank's ordered life at home and at work, she has become his most obsessively prized possession – while Johnny, released from jail, must settle for a different form of imprisonment with his nasty wife and their singularly unattractive brood. Both irony and despair figure in this comedy of manners – the wry kind only the British excel in creating.
