Film Overview

Original Title: Hatuna MeNiyar
English Title: Wedding Doll

Hagit, a vibrant young woman with a mild mental deficiency, is a wistful romantic who dreams of the day she’ll walk down the aisle. In this tale as delicate and intricate as her own life, Hagit works at a toilet-paper factory and uses scraps to create paper dolls wearing wedding dresses. Hagit’s driving desire is for independence, a yearning made even more palpable as she’s kept on a tight leash by her well-intentioned but overbearing mother, Sarah, who often confines her to a tiny apartment. But when Hagit begins an affair with Omri, the factory owner’s son, suddenly their hidden meetings on the soaring ledges of Isreal’s stunning Negev desert unlock a world of possibilities in her mind. Things are less simple for Omri, whose brutish friends taunt his feelings. As the factory faces financial crisis and its closing looms, the self-reliance so cherished by Hagit begins to crumble along with Omri’s prospects of staying in the city. With an uncertain future, Hagit’s extraordinary determination in WEDDING DOLL is a stirring story of resiliency in the face of whatever heartbreak may lie ahead. (In Hebrew with subtitles) –N.D.
