Elenie is trying to balance her dreams as an American with the traditions of her Ethiopian upbringing. Her mother is constantly trying to set her up with potential husbands, but none of them are to her liking. When her brother dies in a tragic subway accident, she finds herself wrapped up in work to numb the pain. As a counselor, she deals with children suffering from anxiety and depression. She befriends the father of one of her patients, an unemployed wise-cracker named Logan. His marriage is falling apart, and the dysfunction at home has led to some behavioral issues with his son. Elenie and Logan develop feelings for each other, finding it more and more difficult to fight off their urges. But they’ll soon discover sexual tension isn’t the only thing tying them together. Their lives are bound in ways they never would have imagined. Logan has a dark secret with consequences that will affect everyone he loves.
