About This Film
Film Overview
?Yaaba? means grandmother in Moorea. It is the name that Bila, a wide-eyed 12-year-old boy, gives to the wizened and toothless Sana, an old woman cast out by the people of her village because of suspected witchcraft. Going against the wishes of his family, Bila befriends Sana. As their relationship deepens, Bila defends her from stone-throwing boys and brings her food. When a little girl in the village contracts tetanus, Bila asks Sana for her herbal cure, although the villagers blame Sana for the illness. While the dry, brown plains of Burkina Faso may be fascinating and unique to most Western filmgoers, the simple story of YAABA both typifies and transcends the film's African setting. It is a timeless and universal tale of essential human traits goodness, generosity, evil, fear, superstiticion, intolerance told with sensitivity and skill. YAABA is an exquisite film.
