Youngstown: Still Standing

Youngstown has traditionally been defined by four things: the steel industry, organized crime, corruption in politics, and producer of world-renown boxers. Told through the remembrances of some of its most famous natives (especially Ed O'Neill of Married with Children and Modern Family fame and Ray “Boom-Boom” Mancini) and everyday citizens, this documentary nostalgically recounts the city's history and contributions, from the early 20th century through present day. Many remember it as “the heart of Ohio,” strategically placed between Cleveland and Pittsburgh, known in its glory days as a place to make a guaranteed living and have a good life. People worked hard by day; played hard at night. YOUNGSTOWN: STILL STANDING also focuses on the darker side and provides an exposé-like look into the rumors associated with the town. Each decade is marked by its tragedies, contributing to the downfall of the city. The 50s were known as the “wide open” times when gambling occurred just about everywhere. The accessibility of money and racqueteering opportunities paved the way to the organized crime of the 60s which, ultimately, earned Youngstown the nickname, Bombtown. Then the closing of the mills in the 70s opened the door for a brisk drug trade and further mob activity. And, finally, there were the Jim Trafficant years.
