The incredible true story of Joseph Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr., “Cyrano,” “Waves”), a Black man born to an enslaved African mother and a plantation owner, who pushes against 18th century French society and a world dead set on seeing him fail in his ambition to become head of the Paris opera. —M.G.
CHEVALIER recounts the true story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a Black composer who rose to renown in 18th century France. The son of an enslaved mother and an aristocrat father, Bologne’s talent and devotion to his craft were met with the barriers of racist society even as he ascended in Marie Antoinette’s court, leading to his omission from the history books. The film follows the composer as he creates an opera for his muse that sets off a fraught love affair, all while the seeds of the French Revolution begin to take root outside the theater walls. With a towering performance from rising star Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Bologne, the film delivers the kind of opulence and passion that demand to be seen on the big screen. —C.F.
