As COVID-19 tore the world apart, the best of us stood up and made a difference. Meet Khaleel Seivwright, who in 2020 designed and built tiny shelters for Toronto’s unhoused population. But when the city tried to put an end to his charity, it put him on a collision course with an uncaring bureaucracy.

The housing crisis continues, with metropolitan areas facing increasing numbers of unhoused people while offering fewer resources. Toronto native Khaleel Seivwright attempts to be an agent of change, building small shelters for unhoused people living outside in his city. SOMEONE LIVES HERE is a documentary that spotlights his work throughout the pandemic and the city organizations that limit and obstruct his humanitarian work, despite the evidence of its success. Seivwright’s journey is not only a reflection of the obstacles in achieving societal common good within the indifference of the system, but also a look at the human compassion and desire for action that exists within local communities. —C.F.
