A group of Ukrainians—soldiers, activists, and citizens alike—bear witness to the growing tensions between their country and Russia from 2014’s Maidan Revolution right up to the 2022 invasion in this humanistic, verité account of love and war shot over eight years. —M.G.

Set largely in 2015 and featuring footage of demonstrations in the Maidan square of Kyiv, A RISING FURY is an urgent and shocking documentary following the Ukraine resistance against Russian forces and influence. The film takes audiences on the ground with Ukrainian activists and soldiers—both in cities and the countryside—for a portrait of resistance in Ukraine during the years before the 2022 Russian invasion. From interviews, we learn of one undercover Russian agent’s attempts to deceive and groom Ukrainian citizens into separatists’ movements. The film provides an intense look at the intimate tactics taken by Russian forces to infiltrate Ukraine and make possible the devastating invasions to come. —C.F.
